Release date & time: The release date for each species will be determined by the Livestock Committee.  The load out times must be before 9:00 a.m. or after 9:00 p.m. of the release date.  Check your barn for the release date.

Rules:

NO BODY CLIPPING OF SWINE ALLOWED!

  1. All market hogs will be ear tagged in June on the designated dates.  A maximum of 5 market hogs per exhibitor may be tagged in June with only 2 being allowed to show at the fair.  Animals that are tagged as market animals in June may not be exhibited as breeding animals.  Scramble hogs will already be tagged upon designated pick up date-scramble pigs do not have to return to the June tagging dates.
  2. Animals that will be entered as purebred market animals must supply registration papers to OSU Extension Office by July 1.  Registration papers do not need to be in the exhibitor’s name and may be a copy of the original.
  3. No hogs will be allowed in the barn until health papers are checked and animal is identified. All market hogs will be identified by ear tag number. No health papers will be written upon arrival at the fair.
  4. All exhibitors shall abide by the Junior Fair Rules and Regulations regarding tampering and/or misrepresentation, fitting and showing.
  5. All animals exhibited must have been actually owned and cared for by the individual exhibitor on or before June 1 of the current year.
  6. All animals should be exercised daily for better animal health.
  7. The showmanship class order will be Senior (age 15-18), Intermediate (age 12 -14) and Junior (age 8-11) as of Jan. 1 of current year and First Year. First year showmanship class is open to ages 8-18, who have never showed hogs before. Exhibitor cannot show in more than one swine showmanship class.
  8. Aisles and pens are to be kept clean throughout the fair. After the sale, manure is to be removed from the pens. If pen areas are not clean, exhibitor will forfeit premium.
  9. Show apparel should be clean and neat including shirt, long pants and hard-soled shoes or boots. No writing, farm name, advertising or 4-H or FFA logos allowed on clothing.
  10. All youth exhibiting swine must be National Pork Producers Council Level III Pork Quality Assurance verified.

11.     If an animal designated for the Jr. Fair Sale dies during the fair, the exhibitor cannot participate in the Jr. Fair Sale.  Exhibitors will still receive premiums earned.

12.     Once an animal leaves the fairgrounds, it will not be allowed back on.

Market Classes

  1. All hogs must have a minimum weight of 200 pounds to sell in the Junior Fair Sale. Crossbred market animals will be uniformly divided into weight classes for show after weigh-in. Upon arrival at the swine barn, all animals go through the scales once, no reweighs.
  2. Limit of two singles per exhibitor in the market swine show. A single can be either sex.
  3. All male market animals should be castrated and healed by fair.  According to the Ohio Code Of Ethics it is unacceptable to castrate swine over seventy-five pounds.
  4. Single market hog classes consist of 10 specific breed classes, a crossbred class, and a Scramble Pig class.  Crossbred and Scramble classes will be further divided by light, middle and heavy weight divisions.  Any purebred breed that does not have at least 5 entries will be shown in an All Breeds class.  Specific breed classes include: Berkshire, Chester White, Duroc, Hampshire, Herefords, Landrace, Poland China, Spotted Poland China, Tamworth and Yorkshire.
  5. First place single market hogs from each class will compete for Grand Champion Single Market Hog. Reserve Grand Champion will be selected from the remaining first place animals and the respective second place animal from the Grand Champion's class.
  6. Awards will be Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Single Market Hog.
  7. Scramble Pig exhibitors must enter the Scramble Pig Class for Champion & Reserve Champion. Scramble pigs are sponsored by the Williams County Pork Producers.
  8. Market hogs that are designated as being sold direct (not sold through the sale ring) will be marked 24 hours before shipment.  It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to make sure the correct animal is marked.  Due to possible health issues, once an animal is shipped, it cannot return to the fairgrounds.

Breeding Gilt Classes

  1. All gilts must be secured by June 1 of current year.  Identification, including ear notch and birthdate, of breeding gilts must be turned into Williams County OSU Extension office by June 1.  A maximum of 5 breeding gilts may be identified by each exhibitor with a maximum of 2 breeding gilts being eligible for show.  Animals that are identified as breeding gilts may not be tagged as market animals.
  2. All breeding gilts should be born between Feb. 1 and April 30 of the current year.
  3. All purebred gilts must be ear notched, meet all registry requirements and be registered. Registration papers must be turned into the OSU Extension Office by July 1.  Registration papers may be a copy of the original.
  4. Health papers will be turned in at the scale.  No health papers will be written upon arrival at the fair.
  5. Crossbred gilts must be ear notched and the exhibitor should know some breed history and birth date of gilts.   Birthdates of crossbred gilts will be turned in at the scales.
  6. All first and second class winners will compete for Champion and Reserve Champion gilt awards.
  7. Gilts will be divided into Purebred or Crossbred.
  8. Gilts are released on Wednesday Sept. 12 after 9PM.  Gilts returning home should be isolated for 30 days from other hogs. Gilts being exhibited in a breeding class can not be entered in the sale or shipped direct from the fairgrounds.
